Perfect Instant Pot Soft Boiled Eggs

When it comes to enjoying soft boiled eggs, the world is your oyster—or, in this case, your breakfast plate. They are a fantastic addition to any meal. You can enjoy them atop avocado toast for a creamy, satisfying texture. They also harmonize beautifully with leafy greens, adding protein and richness to a salad.

Ingredients

  • 8 large free-range eggs
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh chives
  • ½ cup lukewarm water
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Equipment

  • Trivet, Instant Pot

Method

Step 1: Prepare Your Instant Pot
  1. Before you even think about cooking, ensure your Instant Pot is clean and ready to go. Add the lukewarm water to the pot and place the wire trivet inside.
Step 2: Add the Eggs
  1. Carefully place your eggs on the trivet. It’s okay if they touch or stack; the Instant Pot's pressure will cook them evenly!
Step 3: Set the Cooking Time
  1. Secure the lid on your Instant Pot. Select the manual setting and adjust the timer to 5 minutes for soft-boiled perfection. This timing is key; it's just enough to set the whites while keeping those yolks beautifully runny.
Step 4: Natural Release
  1. After 5 minutes, your Instant Pot will beep. Now, this part is crucial: let the cooker naturally release pressure for another 5 minutes. This step allows for a gentle finish to the cooking process without shocking the eggs.
Step 5: Ice Bath Time
  1. Once the 5 minutes are over, carefully transfer your eggs into an ice bath. I typically use a bowl filled halfway with ice and cold water. This shocking transition stops the cooking process instantly—no more overcooked eggs here! Let them chill for about 5 minutes.
Step 6: Peel and Enjoy
  1. Crack the eggs gently by rolling them on a hard surface, then peel them under cold running water to help remove the shell effortlessly. Top them with chives and freshly ground black pepper, and your masterpiece is ready.

Notes

  • Use Fresh Eggs: Fresh eggs are easier to peel and yield better results.
  • Experiment with Timing: If you prefer firmer yolks, try 6 minutes of cooking time and adjust based on your preference.
  • Store Properly: Don’t make too many at once unless you plan to eat them right away. The quality diminishes over time.
  • Add Flavor: Consider adding seasoning to the water before cooking to infuse extra flavor.
Cook in Batches: Use the pot’s capacity by cooking a dozen at once if you plan for meal prep or Sunday brunch.
